About Us

Lavender conjures up pictures of little old ladies and shades of blue and purple. An unmistakable scent arouses a tingling sensation of memories from yesteryear. Lavender is an ancient fragrant herb and was used extensively for personal hygiene and cleansing the home. Its origins, lost in the mists of time, were recorded in Greek writings.

Today, Lavender fields abound all over the world, mainly grown for oil. Apart from Provence in France and Norfolk in England, the USA, Australasia and Japan amongst others have entered the market place. The South African Lavender Industry is relatively new but growing fast.

In the Overberg region of the Western Cape of South Africa, 5km from Swellendam East on the N2 highway is a road sign “Buffeljagsrivier/Olivedale”. Follow the Olivedale Road turnoff for 4.2 km and it will lead you to “Lavender Farm Gifts & Crafts, an enchanting smallholding growing mainly French Dentate Elegans Lavender, renowned for its flowers. A delightful wood and straw cobhouse chalet that is the home of Wynand & Choppie Kotzè owners of the farm, looks out across the field. First impressions on arrival are perfumed lake of blue! With the Langeberg Mountain range as a backdrop and the Bontebok Nature Reserve as a boundary, the entrance to the farm has a display of farm implements from days of yore, which combine to provide the perfect props for a theatrical bouquet of herbs.

Besides Lavender, fragrances that subtly welcome include: Lemon Grass, Rose Geranium, Rosemary and other aromatic herbs. Oils are extracted from plants in a quaint, colorful homemade still. These may be used in Aromatherapy and the production of cosmetics or simply to fill a room with perfume.
